Book Details

Shades of a Desperado is classified as a paranormal romance.  But it doesn’t have anything like vampires in it.

Instead it’s about the love that the heroine feels for her man and how that love can span even time itself!!

This book was originally published in 1997 and you’ll find the 1997 cover below!!

I found this book from Audible with this book cover, and found that it’s an anthology with both books, The Way to Yesterday and Shades of a Desperado, in it!

Yes this story is filled with romance but it doesn’t have very many details in the sexual scenes.  It’s filled with an undeniable passion between the two characters that you’re left sighing!!

But you don’t have to worry about any sexy details.

Book Summary

Shades of a Desperado has an interesting spin that’s actually really enjoyable.

Rachel Brant has a problem.  And she’s not sure what to do about it.

She is woken night after night with these extremely vivid dreams about a man that makes her heart stammer!

At first, she thinks she’s just might be nuts.  But she takes steps to be able to protect herself, not realizing what’s pulling her.

But when the dreams turn to rich and sharp visions, she starts to think that something more just might be happening.

As her job as a paramedic, she’s seen things that she’d rather forget.  But when she’s a witness to a man, who she thought was a drug dealer, be the support and kindness for a little girl in a car wreck, she starts to think her thinking is off.

And when he’s the image of the man in her dreams, that makes things even more confusing.

Boon McDonald is drawn to Rachel too.  But as an undercover agent, he’s not allowed to tell anyone who he really is.

But despite the risks, he still finds himself on her doorstep.

So instead of being about vampires, this book is about the out-of-the box experiences that Rachel has that show her that her and Boon are the reincarnation lovers from a past life and it’s up to her to right a wrong!!

As Rachel and Boon get to know each other, Rachel also realizes how deep the pain and hurt was for Mercy and Dakota, the lovers from the past life.

Instead of thinking that she’s crazy, Rachel starts to take it in stride that she’s having these experiences on top of her new experiences with Boon.

And needless to say, their relationship moves pretty quickly.  Because of what Mercy and Dakota felt, Rachel’s and Boon’s feelings deepen swiftly too.

But Rachel never really tells Boon any of what’s going on, or any of the experiences she keeps happening.

Boon is actually Daniel Blaine, an undercover cop who’s been assigned to find the boss of a small group of thugs that have eluded the law for too long.

As he gets closer and closer to finding the boss, he’s torn between his feelings for Rachel and his duty as a cop.

He’s also worried of what Rachel will think once she knows everything.

Things all come to a head when the boss realizes who he is and that he and Rachel have a thing.  And instead of catching him doing something illegal, Rachel brings him down.

Conclusion

This story was poignant and touching.  I really enjoyed how, instead of freaking out, she just accepts that there’s something more going on and that there’s another’s love at stake than just her own.

As I listened to the story, I felt pulled into the lives of both Rachel and Boon.  Sala has a way of not only describing the place that they live and being able to imagine living there but also the characters.

The characters became real and so compelling, interesting and utterly charming.  Even though Boon’s character was portrayed as a typical drug dealer thug, we got to see the gamut of emotion that he developed for Rachel.

The story was believable and thought provoking.  I enjoyed every bit of it and will definitely listen again and again.
