This is Cassie Lohmeier’s and Krew Slattery’s story. This story is told from their point of view in 3rd person.
This story is located in Good Hope, a small township in the Door County peninsula in Wisconsin.
There’s no crude language or violence. It’s not a completely clean romance. There’s one scene but is tastefully done and fits with the storyline.
So far, in this series, I’ve noticed that these characters have an external and an internal issue to deal with.
Book Summary
This is Cassie’s and Krew’s story.
You first met Krew at the end of the last story. He’s come back to Good Hope cuz of an injury that’s put his NFL career into question.
But he takes one look at Dakota and does a touble take. But he doesn’t know who she is. When he finds out she’s Cassie Lohmeier’s daughter, he’s floored!! Dakota looks exactly like his sister Tessa did at that age.
He also starts to put two and two together.
Cassie the one that got pregnant when was 15yrs old. That was Dakota. She was rejected by her own mom and ended in one bad relationship after another. She had three more boys with two different men. She finally kicked the last one out and is finally on her own and has sworn off men.
This story is also about Dakota. Now on the cusp of adulthood, she’s completely floored when Krew Slattery confronts her saying he’s like her to do a DNA test.
Dakota has played a minor role since the beginning of the series. In book 1, she was the one that forced her own mother to let her stay with aunt Lindsay. After Axl was born, during a terrible time for her mom, Clint almost took advantage of her and her mom (Cassie) did nothing.
During this book, they finally talk about what happened, and apologize and cry and mend their relationship.
Now 20 years later, Krew sees that while he was off being a superstar and living a high life, she was living on food stamps and living in a dump.
He knows that he has to find a way to make it up to her. He has to find a forgive himself for the role he played in her life and the lack that she endured for her whole life.
But he also sees that despite the fact that she’s been poor, she’s done the best she’s could. She made some mistakes along the way, even some monumental ones, but she’s been a good mom. And she’s done it all by herself.
So this is a friends to lovers romance. They decide to be friends for the majority of the story. He decides to be there for her and for her boys. He helps her around the house fixing things, helping her to not be in the same place as what his mother was.
And as they get to know each other again, they realize that they’ve loved each otehr since they were together as teenagers. There has never been another for each other than them.
This is also where we see Cassie find her place in the world, how she finally finds the ability to stand on her own two feet and finds the right kind of love along the way.
This is also a story of learning to love yourself again. Cassie has had to learn to love herself in order to be able to love another. She’s also had to heal in her relationships with Dakota, with her mother, with her sister to be able to love herself again.
There’s one scene in the story. What I liked is that at the end, Krew takes the time and energy, and money to really show Cassie that he loves her. He treats her with all her firsts: first date, first flowers, first everything that she should’ve had when she was younger.
And in the end Krew does end his football career and decides to become a coach. And to make things even better, they all move to Green Bay to live with Krew there!
Conclusion
I liked this story. Instead of calling it a second chance romance, it’s a reunited romance! I like that!
I enjoyed seeing how Krew stepped up and realized how his wrong choice deeply affected Cassie and the lengths that he went to make it right. And not only did he try to make it right between him and Cassie, he also tries to be there for her boys.
So far out of all these stories, I really enjoyed this one. Definitely worth reading.
